100 Years of Welton WI
This year Welton WI celebrated 100 years since it was formed in 1920 . It ran successfully until the beginning of the 2nd World War, then membership dropped of apparently due to the pressure of the war and as many families took in evacuee children the women found duties in the house more demanding. It reformed in 1961. Until this year the WI has celebrated the anniversary in February from 1961, but when correspondence came to light showing the earlier date it was thought that it would nice if there was a special 100th Anniversary Party. So instead of booking a restaurant it was decided to have a very different dinner in the Village Hall with a local outside caterer providing a delicious 3 course dinner beautifully served at the table. Members were offered a glass of prosecco on arrival and during the meal were entertained by Kev.G magician. The hall was transformed the tables beautifully decorated. This was also the occasion of the unveiling of the new WI Banner, designed and assembled by Jan Townsend with all flowers made by members. This will be displayed at any Federation occasion and at the monthly meeting.

We were sad to hear via Leanne Horder, (Rachel’s daughter-in-law in Scotland) of the death of Sue Woodley in Surrey. Sue an ex President of the WI, secretary and who with the help of Joyce Mossop organised many memorable outings, she epitomised the WI before we became dependent on emails and voicemail; a time when the WI tramped round the village singing carols at Christmas. Sue would turn her hand to anything whether it was baking a cake or making a speech and would encourage others to follow her lead.

In August this year instead of a footpath walk, members of Welton WI visited Stowe Landscape Gardens near Buckingham.
The event was arranged in memory of Marjorie Warne who died last December and had been a longstanding member of Welton WI. As a thank you for helping with the wake of Marjorie her family had very kindly donated some money to the WI, the committee decided it would be very nice to treat members to a cream tea. So after lunch members walked around the 250 acres of extensive grounds, some chose to hire a buggy to see the various monuments and follies which the Lord Viscount Cobham built during his lifetime. Then at 3.30 everyone met again in the tea room feeling rather exhausted and enjoyed a lovely cream tea and thought of Marjorie.

Welton Open Gardens Sunday July 6th 2014
On Sunday 6th July 2014 members of Welton WI and St.Martins Church opened their gardens to raise funds. It was the first time gardens had been opened to the public in Welton. It was realised that it was very important to publicise the event so flyers and posters were designed and printed and distributed far and wide. It was decided that tea and cakes would be served in the Village Hall together with a raffle and a cake and plant stall.
The day was fine despite earlier worries, the gardens opened at 1.00.pm and not long after people began to arrive. The publicity had obviously worked as they came from all over the county and even further. Everyone seemed to enjoy the gardens as they were all different, it was calculated that there had been at least 80 visitors and maybe more.
Above is a selection of all the open gardens, the photos were taken on the Friday before the event when the garden owners took the opportunity of an early viewing. They started in Emery Close then moved on to Kiln Lane and Halford Way. Then they made their way up to Ashby Road, down to Well Lane then went on to Welton Park and finally finished in Clarkes Way.

Village Hall Garden 2014

On Monday 28th April 2014 a number of WI members gathered to help tidy up the Village Hall garden, some but not all are pictured here.

The idea was firstly to clear the border in front of the hall, so the poppy seeds which had been donated by DDC could be planted and have a chance of germinating. Everyone worked for two back breaking hours, with a break for coffee and cake.

As you can see it was a job well done. Also much of the shrubbery was also cleared. So when it is time for the fete in June and Welton open gardens on the 6th July the village hall will not let down the rest of the village.
